Woni Educational Trust is a non profit created in the Country of Kenya by Woni Safaris, Ltd. Woni Educational Trust is a charitable organisation working for the welfare and development of the rural poor. We particularly focus on non formal vocational skill development, literacy promotion, health, enviroment, sustainable agriculture, the formation of Self Help Groups, farmers clubs, rural development programmes and income generation programmes.
Woni Safaris feels that with education there is hope for those in the rural areas of Kenya to help themselves and to help their families. Primary schools in the rural areas are to the eight grade, and in order to have a higher education the families would have to send their children on to private boarding schools, which most can not do because of the cost involved. The high schools are spaced far apart, and to go there would mean a long walk in the mornings of miles, with the returns after dark for most children. Thus, the opportunity of higher education is lost.
The girls in the family are taken out to help the Mother collect their daily needs of water, which may during drought times be a round trip walk of many miles upwards in some places to ten miles, carrying a five gallon jug of water. This is an everyday occurrence to have clean water to drink. The boys are enlisted to go to work doing things like sand harvesting, working in the rock quarry, or for wealthy farmers in the fields in order to help the family.
Woni’s dreams of a better education for the less fortunate began some years ago with their first student who they placed in a boarding school, since then it has grown. The children chosen may be orphaned, or from a one parent family. In the boarding schools they receive a good education, three meals a day and clean dormitories where they learn to intermingle with others from all over Kenya.
The Educational Trust has seen some of their students as they graduate from College to go on to a much better life. This program survives on donations from people who hear of the success of it. |
